Project Vision

The Critical Functions of Public Goods (Water provisioning, Food Security, Climate Resilience) and biodiversity in Peusangan, Jambo Aye and Tamiang (PJT) Landscape in Aceh Province are sustainably and collaboratively managed and maintained through integration of local wisdoms, public participations and gender equalities.

Goals :

  1. In 2020, the total surface of natural forest -under timber concessions licenses (existing and potential new) compared to 2015 remains stable and managed sustainably which keep biodiversity value and timber stock within FSC or similar standards.
  2. Total amount of natural forest in the Northern Corridor in the SRJS landscape includes the remaining HCV forest situation in adjacent PO & PP concessions based on 2016 level.
  3. By 2020, the existing natural forest borders of the gap area have not receded and the total area of forest patches is stable or increasing and (re)connected.
  4. By 2020, natural landscape in PJT remains intact so biodiversity can flourish measured against 2010 baseline.
  5. In 2020, the total surface of mangrove forest remains at least 23,000 hectares (2016) which keep biodiversity value and carbon stock of mangrove forests concessions (10,700 ha) remains within FSC or similar standards.
  6. By 2020, the total km of stable (non-eroded) river bank has increased.
  7. As of 2020, flooding events are less severe.
  8. In 2020, the total surface of natural forest -under timber concessions licenses (existing and potential new) compared to 2015 remains stable and managed sustainably which keep biodiversity value and timber stock within FSC or similar standards.

The project will focus on implementing following five strategies:

  1. Sustainable Forest Management in Timber and Charcoal Concession. This strategy will focus on SFM compliant licensing to any operating timber concession in PJT Landscape.
  2. Promote Sustainable and Palm Oil and Pulp and Paper production and HCVF. There are a number of Palm Oil concessions adjacent to or overlap with Northern Sumatra corridor. This strategy will pressure concession holders to apply best management practice to their standard operation.
  3. Responsible Sand & Gravel Extraction. This program will improve the sand and gravel practices of license holders to maintain riverine ecosystem.
  4. Conserving IPG through fighting environmental crime. In order to effectively implement best practice, this strategy will improve policy and increase government capacity on fighting against environmental crime.
  5. Ensuring connectivity in community land. This strategy will ensure that connectivity in corridor in Kreung Peusangan Watershed is established.
